Challenges

"Hey, who put this thing in front of the stereo?"

"Well this isn't very convenient at all."

"How am I supposed to mess with the stereo settings if I have to crawl through this stupid thing every time?"

"Ugh, just ridiculous!"

"Great, now my foot's caught!"

"Now, how do I..., let's see, just turn this way maybe?"

"Well this is just bullshit!  BULLSHIT!"

"God DAMNIT!  Finally!"

"Oh hey look, I could have just walked around it."

Peanut's Weekend

"A bath you say?  Hmm.  Let me think about it and I'll get back to you."

Peanut was most excited about the caramel corn from our trip to Picard's.

"Ah yes, the winter of 2013.  I remember it well."

Issues

Daddy clearly has no idea how swings work.  Why are those holes there if not for her legs?!?

"Daddy!  This tree is in my way!  Move it!"

What's TBone Not Watching?

I'm not watching Fargo, the TV series.  I was somewhat interested.  I liked the movie and I'd read enough about the TV interpretation that I was pretty confident it wasn't going to be a weak re-hash of what was already done so well in the movie.

I hadn't read anything about the cast though, so when I first saw Martin Freeman, I said "Hey!  That's Martin Freeman!".

And, for a second, I was excited about this series.  Then Martin Freeman started talking in that Minnesotan accent made so famous by William H. Macy and Frances McDormand.  Oh jeez, yah, eh?  And I was no longer excited.  I can accept Martin Freeman as any kind of Briton and even a hobbit but he is no mid-westerner.

What is love?

I hate cooked broccoli.  I hate all cooked vegetables but broccoli is near the top of the list.  The smell of it is enough to make my stomach turn.  It is my kryptonite.  So there is no greater testament of the love I have for my daughter than the fact that I voluntarily cook this vile vegetable for her, and feed it to her, and let her mush a big piece of it all up and down my arm just to watch her smile at my discomfort.  That is love.

Down Wind

The joy and pride one feels when being Paige's spotter as she climbs the stairs is slightly diminished when the reason you're going upstairs is to change an over-ripe diaper.  Dear lord!

Gadget Drama

I've been really scratching my head on what gadget I need next.  It really seems like I have everything.  Still, when the Google Chromecast became available in Canada, it was almost a reflex reaction to order it.  Didn't need it.  Not at all.  But it's only $40!  I would have been a fool not to order it.

So I got it and hooked it up to the TV.  And it worked just like it should.  You find stuff on your tablet or phone and then you "cast" it up to your TV to watch on the big screen.  Good for netflix and youtube and any film files of questionable legality that might be on our laptop.  So it does the exact same thing we were using the PS3 for.  Except no surround sound.

With the Chromecast hooked directly to the TV their was no way to get any surround sound signal down to the stereo.  Our stereo is one generation before HDMI inputs became standard on receivers.  So I did what any sensible person would do, I ordered a new stereo.  I bought it with my accumulated Sony points off my credit card just to verify that I haven't completely lost my mind.

We got the stereo within a week and re-routed everything to run to the stereo and then video only up to the TV.  Hooray!  Chromecast with surround sound!  And that was pretty much the last time we used the Chromecast.  The PS3 is just so much easier and plus we have the NHL on there as well.  The Chromecast wasn't much competition for our attention.

Although one member of the household did find it endlessly fascinating.  Now that the Chromecast was sticking out of the back of the stereo instead of the TV, it was within reach of our surprisingly strong peanut.  Jen messaged this picture to me a couple days ago with the text "Can it be fixed?":

I didn't have high hopes.  I got home and managed to pry the HDMI dongle straight again.  I shook my head as I looked in the port and saw the collection of mangled pins inside.  I did my best to straighten them, crossed my fingers, and slowly eased it back into the stereo.

And damn it if it didn't work!  Amazed.  Still not very useful, day to day, but remarkable durability!

"Sooooo, how upset would you be if I got mud on my pants?"

Picnic on the deck.

Stair Master

Peanut has taken a renewed interest in the stairs this last week.  I've caught her a couple times standing on the first step.  Last night she was up on that step again and I went over to sit beside her and explain how dangerous stairs were.  Then she climbed up the next step.  Then up on the first landing.  Then she just kept going.  Step by step she climbed all the way to the second floor. With me right behind her, of course.  I imagine she's going to have some tired legs today.

Happy to spend the day with mom again.

"What are YOU looking at?"

"Yup, I see your problem."

"Axle bearing is loose, I'll just tighten that up for you."

Daddy Daughter Weekend!

All of our practice and training was in preparation for this weekend.  Two days of dad being solely responsible for the health and well-being of our treasured little peanut.  And it went well!  Paige was very cooperative.  Nap and meal times were right on schedule and when Jen got home at night all fingers and toes were accounted for.  We played, read books, went for walks, drove around in the Honda, and hung out on the deck on a beautiful Sunday afternoon.  It was great.

And such a relief.  We now know Paige won't be traumatized by being separated from Mom for a day.  A real confidence booster that will hopefully open up Jen's world and let her plan more trips away from the house and not worry that Dad will fumble the baby.

Speaking of dads, MY dad showed up on Saturday!  He made the trip from Ottawa to take possession of Ajax The Wanderer.  And also got to see Paige do laps around the main floor.  He seemed pleased with his new pet and I know we were pretty happy to have found Jax such an enthusiastic owner.  I advised my dad to keep the cat in the carrier for the trip home but my dad is a traditionalist and he's traditionally never listened to me.  So now his car smells like cat poop.  We look forward to getting updates on Jax as he settles into his new digs and tries to win over my mom.

Yah, a very good weekend.

Ajax

Well, the little weasel found his way into the house.  We have dubbed him Ajax or Jax for short.  I took him to the vet to get him checked out and with the all clear for fleas we let him stay in the basement.  He seems to be extremely happy to finally be inside and have soft, warm places to sleep.  Interactions with the other cats have been tense.  Surprisingly, Jax has been the aggressive one.  He gives up two pounds to Timmay and 3 pounds to Rocky but that hasn't stopped him from bullying them both.  I've had to break up a couple fights.

But the drama will be short lived.  My dad has claimed the little guy and will be coming down shortly to relocate him to Ottawa.  My mom is thrilled at the news and can't wait to meet him!  We'll leave it up to my dad on whether the Ajax name stays.  He's a charming little guy when he's not tormenting our other cats.  It'll be a little sad to see him go but I'm glad we were able to find him a home that's a little more comfortable than our work shop.
